A Covent Garden courtyard under fairy lights, a Soho booth with a Champagne button, a Ritz dinner and a Richmond Arts and Crafts house: ten London restaurants for date night, with Michelin price levels.
London has restaurants that are romantic because of their rooms, and others that are romantic because of their cooking. The best date-night restaurants manage both, with soft lighting, polished service and a table where you can hear each other talk. This guide covers ten of them, from a flower-filled French restaurant in Covent Garden to a Michelin-starred neighborhood favorite south of the river.
We have tried to be honest about the atmosphere. Some of these rooms are grand and formal, others are small and cozy, and which one fits depends on whether you are celebrating an anniversary or going on a first date.
This is an editorial selection, not a scientific or absolute ranking. We started with the MICHELIN Guide's list of romantic London restaurants, which was updated on October 7, 2026, and checked each restaurant's address, setting and price level against its own listing. Every restaurant on that list is covered here.
The guide is compiled from published reporting, not from personal visits. Menus, prices and opening arrangements change often, so check current details before you book.

When a night needs to feel special, these three restaurants deliver the sense of occasion, each in a very different style.
Clos Maggiore is at 33 King Street in Covent Garden, and the MICHELIN Guide lists it at £££. Michelin says there are few more stereotypically romantic restaurants in London, with soft fairy lights, an intimate atmosphere and a lot of flowers. It also notes that the cooking is profoundly French, with classical dishes made from quality ingredients and executed cleanly.
Traditional tablecloths, armchairs and formal service add to the sense of a special night out. The restaurant is also known as a proposal spot, thanks to a courtyard room draped in blossom, so ask for it when you book.
The Ritz Restaurant is at 150 Piccadilly in St James's and holds two Michelin stars. Michelin lists it at ££££ and says it is hard to look past for an anniversary, a birthday or a proposal. The cooking is modern British, and the walk through the hotel lobby adds to the sense of occasion.
When Michelin updated its listing in October 2026, the restaurant was operating in a different part of the hotel while the famous frescoed dining room was being renovated. Check the current arrangement and the dress code when you book.
Bob Bob Ricard is at 1-3 Upper James Street in Soho, and Michelin lists it at ££££. Swanky leather booths and a "Press for Champagne" button at each table give it a sense of fun, and the polished brass and marble add luxury. The Soho original is the smaller of its two sites, and Michelin says it pairs grandeur with intimacy in a way that suits date night.
The menu is traditional British, and a signature dish is the chicken and Champagne pie. Book a booth and use the button, which is the reason most people come.
Benares is at 12a Berkeley Square in Mayfair and holds a Michelin star. Michelin lists it at ££££ and calls it probably the most romantic of London's starred Indian restaurants. The room is dimly lit and decorated in sultry tones, and you walk past a flower-filled pool on your way in.
The kitchen serves highly skilled Indian dishes with strong flavors. It is a good choice if you want a romantic, candlelit dinner that is not French.
Cycene is at the Blue Mountain School, 9 Chance Street in Shoreditch, and holds a Michelin star. Michelin lists it at ££££. The evening starts when you ring a doorbell, then moves through drinks, bread and snacks at the bar, a visit to the kitchen to meet chef Taz Sarhane and a candlelit dining room with wood paneling.
The structure makes it an immersive experience, and Michelin says the dining room is the most romantic part of the evening. It suits couples who like a long, theatrical dinner.
Trinity is at 4 The Polygon in Clapham, near Clapham Common, and holds a Michelin star. Michelin lists it at ££££ and says it has become an institution in the area, with the warmth of a neighborhood restaurant and boldly flavored cooking that rivals some of central London's best chefs.
It is the choice for South Londoners who do not want to travel into the center for date night. For a more affordable evening, the same team runs Upstairs at Trinity, which holds a Bib Gourmand and serves generous sharing plates.
Dysart Petersham is at 135 Petersham Road in Richmond and holds a Michelin star. Michelin lists it at £££. The restaurant occupies a beautiful Arts and Crafts house that feels more homely than most restaurants, and Michelin suggests a stroll in the adjacent Richmond Park before dinner.
For something special, book one of the regular classical recital dinners, where the meal comes with live music. It is the best choice here for couples who want to leave central London behind.
These three restaurants are smaller and cozier, and each is built around something specific: plant-based fine dining, wine and cocktails.
Gauthier Soho is at 21 Romilly Street, inside a Soho townhouse. It is a fully vegan restaurant from chef Alexis Gauthier, and Michelin lists it at £££. Michelin says it is far plusher than most plant-based restaurants, which makes it ideal for a romantic dinner, and highlights Gauthier's signature black kelp caviar.
It is a good option if one or both of you eat a plant-based diet, since the meal is a proper night out rather than a compromise.
Noble Rot is at 51 Lamb's Conduit Street in Bloomsbury, and Michelin lists it at £££. The restaurant is named after its owners' wine magazine, which takes its name from the phenomenon that produces dessert wines. Michelin calls it a paradise for wine lovers.
The room has low lights, candlelit tables and dark wood, and the food is classic, unfussy French cooking. The wine service is as strong as the list, which makes it the best pick for sharing a bottle.
Julie's is at 135 Portland Road in Holland Park, and Michelin lists it at ££, the lowest price level in this guide. The restaurant dates back to 1969 and was once a celebrity party spot. The room is full of opulent, colorful fabrics and cozy booths, and the more intimate downstairs room is the one to request.
The drinks menu has a page on the evolution of the martini, and the classically based menu includes lobster soufflé and a Royal Caviar mille-feuille. It is a good start to an evening out that begins with cocktails.
The MICHELIN Guide's list includes Benares, Bob Bob Ricard Soho, Clos Maggiore, Cycene, Dysart Petersham, Gauthier Soho, Julie's, Noble Rot, The Ritz Restaurant and Trinity.
Clos Maggiore in Covent Garden, with its flower-filled rooms and blossom courtyard, is a well-known proposal spot. The Ritz Restaurant is another traditional choice for a special occasion.
Julie's in Holland Park, which Michelin lists at ££. The next level up is £££, which covers Clos Maggiore, Dysart Petersham, Gauthier Soho and Noble Rot.
Gauthier Soho serves an entirely vegan menu in a Soho townhouse, and Michelin calls it the most romantic of London's vegetarian restaurants.
